The Last Samurai is one of Tom Cruise’s best movies. The story, the acting, the directing, the cinematography, everything just comes together to make something really unique. Yes, it is very Dances with Wolves-ish but I like that story and this is a cool Samurai version of that so go fuck yourself if you’re one of those “I hate Avatar because it’s not original” people. The Last Samurai is dealing with a completely different people and way of life than Dances with Wolves, and samurai are badass.

Shout out to Ken Watanabe. Watanabe is a very under-appreciated actor and kills it in this movie. Without Watanabe’s presence in this movie, I don’t really know if I would like it. He plays the samurai leader so well that I want to become a samurai. Of course I kind of wanted to become a samurai before this movie but Watanabe definitely helps that aspiration.

The Last Samurai is not perfect. I have some problems with the shot selection which I feel is a little to constricting for such a large scale movie. I would have like more wide open shots. But on the hole The Last Samurai is a very beautiful look into the dead lifestyle of the Japanese samurai.
