This “super-sized” temptress was available on Netflix and I gotta say, it felt stale. Maybe I wasn’t in the mood to laugh but that’s really never the case. Funny is funny and when I watch something that’s funny I laugh, the way that comedy usually works. I remember finding the theatrical version funny last year and laughing a good bit but this extended version just didn’t do it for me.
The jokes used in this version were clearly improvised and for the most part repetitive. Ron Burgundy says his “By the nipple of Spock” thing way way too often. They’re all different versions of the same joke and eventually it’s just not funny. Steve Carell is left laughing at everything. And it’s not so much that they use new jokes as they use a blatantly improvised version of the joke that wasn’t as funny as the one they went with in the theatrical version, which honestly was probably improvised too.
I don’t want to say much more because I feel it unfair to judge a movie based on its extended version that replaced a lot of the jokes it went with in the original to give the audience a new experience, but if you are thinking of rewatching Anchorman 2 stick with the theatrical version rather than this super-sized one, because it’s not so super.
