The Spirit of the Beehive (1973)

Directed By – Víctor Erice

Screenplay By – Víctor Erice & Ángel Fernández Santos

Cinematography By – Luis Cuadrado

Starring Fernando Fernán Gómez, Teresa Gimpera, Ana Torrent & Isabel Tellería

95 min.

This movie is mesmerizing in the best way. It’s also just the right length for this kind of movie. Sometimes movies like this go on and on but this is just the right amount to make you think but not make you bored. What’s strange about this movie is that it’s very weird but just real enough that it could have happened. It takes place thirty years before it’s actual production date but it feels very authentic.

The music is super creepy and I haven’t seen a credit sequence set up the tone of the movie as well as El Espíritu de la Colmena’s. From the opening titles you are put in an eerie state of mind.

The Spirit of the Beehive is a great film that uses history and film history to create the stage for youthful innocence’s exploration into the unknown.
